Abstract

Traditional rural settlements carry China’s long-standing agricultural civilization and the production and daily life of the vast majority of its people, constituting the largest and most widely distributed cultural heritage system. With the advancement of the national rural revitalization strategy, the conservation and sustainable development of traditional rural settlements face significant opportunities and challenges. It is necessary to review the evolution of research on traditional rural settlements and explore the direction and prospects of its future development. By delving into and organizing historical materials such as major academic journals, newspapers, monographs, and policy documents, and integrating them with the national economic, cultural, and social background as well as the actual situation of rural construction and development, this study reconstructs the entire process of the development of traditional rural settlement research in China since the 1930s. The study reveals the historical context, driving forces, and research paradigm characteristics of different development stages of traditional rural settlement research, and assesses and forecasts its future trends and directions, with the aim of advancing both academic inquiry and practical conservation efforts.
